PU space scientist participates in a seminar at China

LAHORE: (Saturday, December 20, 2025): Punjab University Department of Space Science, Associate Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood participated in a seminar at Hainan, China and served as a key panelist. He presented a vision for a space-based economy as the foundation for sustainable coastal development and sustainable development goals of the United Nations. Addressing international delegates, Dr Khalid Mahmood highlighted the historic Pakistan-China space partnership, citing the launch of Pakistan's PRSS-1 satellite. He framed Hainan's Wenchang Spaceport as a Launchpad for "shared solutions" to global challenges. He proposed tangible collaborations, including an International Space-Eco Innovation Hub in Hainan and a joint Asia project to monitor mangrove carbon using satellite data. "This engagement showcases our institute's expertise in applying space science for global good," he added. Dr Khalid Mahmood said that from the Indus Delta to Hainan, orbital data is key to protecting coasts and ensuring prosperity. He also emphasized the importance of the two countries' joint efforts in the space sector for the region, highlighting the need to further promote this collaboration and include other countries in it.
