PU CAD organizes seminar on film as social statement

LAHORE: (Saturday, December 20, 2025): Punjab University College of Art & Design, Department of Graphic Design organized a seminar on ‘Film as a Social Statement’. An exclusive screening of an award winning film “Push Button For” (an adaptation of Overcoat) and a reflective talk by director and visual artist Mumtaz Hussain. The seminar was attended by Chairman Department of Graphic Design Prof Dr Ahmad Bilal, prominent figures from Pakistan’s creative and film industries, including film superstar Ms Meera Jee, former Chairman of the Department Prof Israr Chishti, Dr Arooj Rizvi, journalists, faculty members and students of the Graphic Design Department. In his address, Mumtaz Hussain shared his academic and professional journey, beginning with his formative training as a designer. He reflected on his mentorship under the legendary designer Milton Glaser, followed by his professional experiences within leading US advertising agencies, where he worked on international brands including Pierre Cardin, Calvin Klein and many more. He traced his transition into filmmaking through formal studies at a New York–based art and film school, highlighting how interdisciplinary training shaped his narrative and visual sensibilities. The talk then moved toward his evolution as a short story writer and filmmaker, with Hussain walking the audience through his body of work, encompassing nine films that explore social realities through cinematic storytelling. A key moment of the seminar was his reading of Overcoat, a short story by eminent writer Gullam Abbas, followed by the screening of his film adaptation “Push Button For”. This segment offered students a rare opportunity to engage directly with the processes of literary interpretation, adaptation, and visual narration. Addressing the audience, Meera Jee interacted with the students, sharing her reflections on cinema as a cultural force. She warmly appreciated the screening of Overcoat, commending Mumtaz Hussain’s sensitive storytelling and the film’s ability to translate literary depth into a compelling visual narrative. Chairman Department of Graphic Design, Prof Dr Ahmad Bilal, appreciated the work of Mumtaz Hussain, as he provided a unique experience of linking the literature with the visual language and realized us the power of Critical Realism of Urdu storytelling, as it seems to be relevant with the each and every part of the planet. He said that the department reaffirmed its commitment to fostering interdisciplinary learning by hosting practitioners whose work bridges design, literature, and film, and by positioning visual storytelling as a critical medium for social reflection and dialogue.
